Synopsis

Resumen extraído de la fuente original:

The prestige of A Fala has changed substantially over the last forty years along with the attitude of the speakers towards their mother tongue. The aim of the article is to describe various aspects of this evolution. The greater prestige of the language, support for diversity, and numerous manifestations of involvement of the community of speakers in cultural activities constitute the external factors of this process. Speakers’ attitudes are culturally determined and are manifested by beliefs, sentiments and behaviour related to the language. The reflection of these factors in the speech community is exposed based on data collected by a questionnaire distributed among speakers, whose results are contrasted with personal experience. The point of view of the participant observer is possibly more subjective, but it reflects long coexistence with the community of speakers along with participation in linguistic projects and cultural activities. The analysis also includes internal factors. The language follows its natural evolution, which is why we can observe internal changes in its structure. These changes are mainly caused by language contact. Spanish, as the national language, has an important role in this evolution process, however, we can notice that it does not affect all levels of the language equally. While we find numerous interferences at the lexical level, the phonetic and morphological levels are little affected. Keywords:A Fala, community of speakers, prestige, attitude, Spanish-like forms.
