This article focuses on the study of the languages and linguistic varieties spoken in the territories along the Spanish-Portuguese border. A brief description of the languages and linguistic varieties in contact in the border area is provided. The historical, social and political factors which have impacted on the linguistic configuration of the border space are also examined.As is well known, political and linguistic borders often do not coincide. We will show where this lack of correspondence occurs along the borders of Spain and Portugal and explain the causes of these exceptions.
